Surface Pro and Windows tablet PC users have an amazing array of great software at their disposal and most of it costs only a fraction of what you will pay for a license from Adobe or Corel.
Anyone who reads this blog regularly knows that I'm an unabashed fan of Celsys' Clip Studio Paint, known outside Japan as Manga Studio.
This week both Celsys and western distributor Smith Micro published updates to the software. This brings the English language downloadable Clip Studio Paint to 1.4.1 and Manga Studio to 5.0.6.
The new features aren't earth-shattering, but there is a nifty new contour paint that makes it a little easier to simulate rounded surfaces. And the EX versions allow you to export your creations directly to EPUB for electronic readers.
To celebrate the new updates, both Celsys and Smith Micro are offering deep discounts through July 14. The Pro version which normally retails for $50 is only $15 and EX is $84. To buy via Celsys visit http://www.clipstudio.net/en/purchase or to purchase via Smith Micro visit http://my.smithmicro.com/manga-studio-comic-illustration-software.html
The updates require a valid serial number and are available here from Smith Micro http://my.smithmicro.com/manga-studio-comic-illustration-software-updates.html and here from Celsys http://www.clipstudio.net/en/dl
For such a low entry price, there's really no excuse not to try this great application on your Surface Pro 3 or other Windows device. It is ideally suited to show off the power of the platform and form factor and I've often mentioned to Microsoft that it should be standard issue on every penabled tablet and convertible laptop sold.
Below is the complete change log:

Latest Anime Studio release offers frame-by-frame design and raster-like characteristics with natural freehand drawing and painting for more life-like results
ALISO VIEJO, CA – May 27, 2015 – The Productivity and Graphics group of Smith Micro Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: SMSI) today announced the latest version of its Telly Award-winning Anime Studio® software, designed to streamline production for studios and professional artists who create complex animations. The new Frame-by-Frame feature of Anime Studio 11 lets artists switch between traditional animation techniques and more automated bone-rigging techniques, making it faster and easier to achieve different effects without switching tools. New and enhanced drawing and painting features provide a natural feel and raster-like characteristics with life-like results.
“With Anime Studio 11, we’re able to combine the best of rigging and frame-by-frame work, allowing two different animation worlds to finally touch each other with great results. Working in teams is easier and more powerful than ever before. Plus, artists can now create powerful rigs and effects that were extremely difficult or impossible with other tools. I love the simplicity of the new features - they’re clean and incredibly deep,” said Victor Paredes, renowned artist with Flourfilms.
Key Features of Anime Studio 11
• Frame-by-Frame – allows artists to immediately switch between bone-rigging and a frame-by- frame workspace for authentic, precise and life-like animation results.
• Layer Referencing – propagates changes from one design layer to all related layers, even across multiple documents, improving accuracy and saving significant time for team-based productions.
• Animated Shape Ordering – extends the ability to quickly and easily rearrange shapes anywhere within an animation timeline rather than adjusting each full frame independently.
• Enhanced Tools and Brushes – Freehand drawing is now simpler and more realistic with new automated Merge Strokes, a Smoothing option for round, smooth shapes, and a more efficient Blob Brush for simple shapes. The new Color Points tools lets artists blend colors together in new ways, while Merged Alpha and Drift Angle brushes offer a more natural and pleasing look and feel.
• JSON File Format – support for Java Script Object Notation (JSON) file format provides faster file processing and more flexible asset tagging within files, making it easier to exchange and manage related assets across workgroups. Backward compatibility with older versions of Anime Studio is retained, as well as compatibility with MotionArtist® file formats.
A full list of features and enhancements is available here: Anime Studio 11
“For movie studios and other animation production houses, speed to market is critical, so we’ve focused our development of Anime Studio 11 on making it faster and easier for professional artists to work more efficiently in groups, while allowing each artist to use the tools that suit their individual styles and unique vision,” said Fahim Niaz, Director of Product Management for Smith Micro Software. “We’re extremely proud that Anime Studio has earned a reputation of being both simple and powerful to use, with results worthy of global recognition, including an Oscar nomination for ‘Song of the Sea,’ produced in part with Anime Studio.”
“We used Anime Studio for a number of elements in ‘Song of the Sea’, including various efx elements, several vehicles, animated backgrounds, and four underwater scenes that were fully-animated with Anime Studio. These were long characters, like whales, swimming in camera-panning scenes, and using Anime Studio allowed us to animate the scenes quickly and efficiently. Our director could instantly see the scenes in full color, in almost exactly the final look, enabling him to make editing choices prior to final composite. We are really looking forward to incorporating Anime Studio 11 into future productions,” said Jeremy Purcell, Assistant Director, Cartoon Saloon.
Pricing and Availability
Anime Studio Pro 11 is available for $299.99 and Anime Studio Debut 11 for novice artists is $49.99. Detailed product, pricing and upgrade information is available here.

So you're dying to max out your credit card on a new Surface Pro 2 but are worried your favorite won't run. Or you've got the Microsoft wonder tablet but don't want to plunk down a bunch of cash on a graphics app that will blow up your new machine.
Fear not. You've come to the right place. "What Run, What Doesn't V1" was the raison d'etre for this blog and we're proud to present the Surface Pro 2/Windows 8.1 version. Rather than update the original, we'll keep that one in place for anyone who chooses not to update to Windows 8.1. (Don't know why any of you would do that, but we know there are paranoid folks out there who fear change).
Important note: the list below contains only versions I've personally tested on my Surface Pro 2. It's very likely that older versions listed in the original feature will still operate, but we won't be able to re-test those older apps for Windows 8.1 compatibility.
Recommendations are based on UI suitability to pen and touch navigation.
The list below will grow as we install more software. Since most graphics apps limit the number of installations, we're have to be somewhat deliberate in how much we migrate at a time.
As always, if you've got a specific tool you'd like us to test, please let us know in the comments section below.

UPDATE 4/7/2014: Trial versions are now available for download from Smith Micro. http://www.contentparadise.com/productDetails.aspx?id=24231

Just received the following email from Manga Studio Product Manager Fahim Niaz at Smith Micro:
Digital versions of Manga Studio 5 and 5 EX are back next week!
The digital download versions of Manga Studio will now include Clip Studio Paint branding. Manga Studio and Clip Studio Paint are the exact same applications. Clip Studio Paint will simply be the digital download version of Manga Studio. The Manga Studio website and branding will remain the same and we will continue to promote the Manga Studio brand for both the DVD and download versions.
Another great piece of news is that Smith Micro will be providing customer support to all English versions of Clip Studio Paint and Manga Studio! We will also be receiving updates sooner and will release updates for both Manga Studio and Clip Studio Paint at the same time.
With all that being said, we’re extremely excited to be able to once again offer digital download versions of this great product!
It's good to see that Japanese developer Celsys and Smith Micro have reached an agreement to settle what has been one of the oddest episodes in consumer software sales that I've ever witnessed.
The lack of a download version of Manga Studio has no doubt dampened sales since Celsys decided to self-market the English language downloadable version of its popular art program Clip Studio Paint. It's unfortunate (mostly for those of us who have to write about the subject) that we will have to continue to refer to both product names, but that's a minimal inconvenience.
I asked Niaz whether the new arrangement with Celsys means that English-language users may eventually see the release of other products like Clip Studio Modeler, Coordinate or Action. His response was that those products were still in "discussion phases."
Celsys has posted its first update to the English and Chinese editions of Clip Studio Paint, the downloadable version of the popular paint package distributed worldwide as Manga Studio.
Although I haven't seen received any confirmation, we can presume that Smith Micro will soon offer this update to Manga Studio users. It's been difficult to predict the future of updates to either product since the developers decided to bifurcate distribution and banned Smith Micro from selling a downloadable version of the program. Despite selling only physical versions, Smith Micro has been able to continue to post electronic updates (most recently version 5.0.4)
There have been four releases of Japanese editions of Clip Studio Paint since it was first published in English last fall. Besides many stability improvements, version 1.3.1 introduces a variety of 2D/3D LT features, such as LT layer conversion, line extraction and tone gradient.
A full description of new features and changes can be found here: http://www.clipstudio.net./en/dl/release_note.
Even if you're a Manga Studio customer, it's worth downloading the free Clip Studio Paint 1.3,1 trial so you can become familiar with the new features while MS is being updated. To date, the two programs are nearly identical except for slight translation differences.
Download the Clip Studio Paint here.
UPDATE October 10: Go get it now! http://manga.smithmicro.com/updates.html (If, like me, you've visited the updates page every day for the last month, you may need to hit refresh on your browser to see the link for the update).
UPDATE October 3: Smith Micro was obviously unable to make the end of September date mentioned below. I've just received word that the update should be available to users by the end of next week.

For the past week, I've been playing with the latest update to Manga Studio (5.0.3), which introduces all the Surface Pro and Windows 8 tablet friendly features I've covered extensively in previous write-ups about its Japanese cousin Clip Studio Paint.
Smith Micro Product Manager Fahim Niaz has confirmed that the product is on track for release before the end of the month.
If you use Manga Studio on a tablet, the update is an absolute must-have, as it significantly declutters the interface and adds plenty of touch-friendly targets and menus.
To take advantage of the new touch operations settings, make sure to turn them on in the Preference/Interface panel.
I haven't compared every single menu item, but this update appears to bring Manga Studio precisely in line with Clip Studio Paint 1.2.7 from developer Celsys.
Besides the support for Windows 8 touch operations that I know tablet users will love, the release includes several other changes.
Key Updates and Enhancements in version 5.0.3:
- 3D camera update
- Raster to vector conversion
- Sony VAIO DUO 13 pen pressure sensitivity has been fixed
- Use scanners to read images
- Continuous scanning capability
- Rotate contents on the canvas
- Supports Windows 8 touch operations
- Includes folio for writing and printing
- 3D light source
- Evenly split frames
- Join frames
- Symmetry ruler
- Parallel curve ruler
- Multiple curve ruler
- Edit control points of a curve ruler
- Central axis added to concentric ruler
- Display tone area
I'll post an update the moment the release becomes available.
As we've reporting for a while, Japanese developer Celsys has delivered an English language download version of its Clip Studio Paint software.
The Pro version retails for $50 and the EX version sells for $219. Smith Micro will continue to sell physical copies of the software internationally under the name Manga Studio.
Clip Studio Paint's Surface Pro and Windows tablet friendly features we wrote about here are not yet available in Manga Studio, although representatives have promised that updates should be available soon.
In the meantime, if you'd like to give the program a try, a trial version is available on the Celsys website.
